HC Deb 02 February 1943 vol 386 c739
32. Sir Hugh O'Neill

asked the Secretary of State for War why serving soldiers who are standing as candidates for Parliament are not allowed to publish in their election addresses photographs of themselves wearing uniform?

Sir J. Grigg

A soldier who is released from service to contest a Parliamentary election is not allowed to address a meeting of his electors in uniform, and it would be inappropriate that a photograph of himself in uniform should appear in his election address.

Sir H. O'Neill

In view of the fact that nearly all candidates are now appealing to numbers of electors who are in the Forces, and that, as far as I know, there is no prohibition against a photograph of a candidate in uniform appearing in the Press, is not this going a little too far?

Sir J. Grigg

Personally, I do not think so.

Mr. Granville

Does this apply to officers as well?

Sir J. Grigg

Certainly. The particular candidate in question is an officer.
