HC Deb 15 December 1943 vol 395 c1548
65. Mr. Lipson

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will change the prescribed maxima of the rates of pay for schoolchildren who help with the postal work at Christmas, so as to provide that they shall be the same for both sexes?

The Postmaster-General (Captain Crookshank)

No, Sir.

Mr. Lipson

Does not the right hon. and gallant Gentleman consider that this is carrying the discrimination between the sexes to an absurd length, and will he not have sufficient courage to make this simple reform?

Captain Crookshank

The Christmas service arrangement is one that was adopted last year, and I see no reason for any change.

Mr. W. J. Brown

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that this House has twice expressed, by vote, the view that rates of pay between men and women for equal work shall be applied to Government Services and is not this obviously a case where it should be applied?

Captain Crookshank

These are boys and girls anyhow.

Mr. Lipson

In view of the clearly unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I shall raise this matter on the Adjournment.
