HC Deb 15 December 1943 vol 395 cc1548-9
66. Captain Marsden

asked the Postmaster-General the postal rate of a letter not exceeding 1 oz. to ships of the Royal Navy and ships requisitioned for war ser- vice, and the postal rate of a letter not exceeding 1 oz. to the crews of merchant ships?

Captain Crookshank

The same postage rates apply to letters to ships of the Royal Navy, ships requisitioned for war service and merchant ships. If they are in Home Waters the ordinary inland rates apply; while if they are in Foreign Waters the rate is 1½d. for a letter not exceeding 1 oz. in weight, and 1d. for each additional ounce.

Captain Marsden

Will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman consider what this Question really means? Why should friends and relatives of the men of the Navy pay less than the friends and relatives of men serving on merchant ships, observing that they do not know where the ships are or where they are bound?

Captain Crookshank

I do not think that my hon. and gallant Friend could have heard what I said. It is the same rate whether they are merchant ships, requisitioned ships or ships of the Royal Navy.

Captain Marsden

I misunderstood the right hon. and gallant Gentleman. I merely ask him in that case whether he will make that widely known as it is a change in the recent Regulation.
