HC Deb 15 December 1943 vol 395 cc1550-1
72. Major Manningham-Buller

asked the Secretary of State for War how many officers holding emergency commissions have accepted the invitation to apply for Regular commissions; and what number have been accepted?

Mr. Henderson

Up to 4th December, 3,667 such applications had reached the War Office; 1,115 applicants have been found suitable for Regular commissions but their final acceptance will depend on the requirements of the Army for officers.

Major Manningham-Buller

Does not the Minister consider that if some announcement was made as to post-war conditions of service, the number of applications would considerably increase?

Mr. Henderson

I do not think so; I think potential officers are well aware of the position.
