§ 28. Mr. Bellengerasked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether the improved sinkings of U-boats in the Atlantic Ocean in recent months have been due to surface action or air activity; and how many enemy submarines, during the last six months, have been sunk by surface craft?
Mr. AlexanderThe increased sinkings are due to increases in the surface and air forces available together with improvements in equipment and technique. As regards details, I regret that I cannot add to the monthly statements made by the President and the Prime Minister and to the joint communiqués issued from time to time. Both surface and air forces, working in the closest collaboration, have shared in the increased rate of sinkings.
Lieut.-Commander BraithwaiteIs it not the case that it is the vigorous defence of the merchant ships themselves which has largely contributed to these laudable results?
Mr. AlexanderThe gallantry of the merchant seamen is something that is recognised by all of us, but I do not think I wish to add to my answer.
