HC Deb 30 September 1942 vol 383 c774
59. Mr. Hannah

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether, in view of the unfairness of the present distribution of tomatoes, he will consider some rationing system similar to that applicable to onions?

Mr. Mabane

As the present distribution of tomatoes is not unfair and with the able and willing co-operation of the trade has proved to be highly satisfactory, my Noble Friend sees no reason for my hon. Friend's suggestion.

Mr. Hannah

Do the Government think that those views are universal?

Mr. Mabane

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Cluse

Were there not great variations in the supply of tomatoes in areas two or three miles apart?

Mr. Mabane

On the whole the distribution has worked far better than might have been expected.
