HC Deb 30 September 1942 vol 383 c776
63. Mr. Reakes

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he is aware of, and prepared to veto, the practice of certain café proprietors in the Manchester and Merseyside areas of refusing the service of tea and coffee during certain hours of the day unless an order is given for a substantial meal?

Mr. Mabane

There would appear to be evidence that certain caterers refuse to serve light refreshments at certain times, on the ground that their staff and accommodation are fully occupied in the service of substantial meals. This would not appear to be an unreasonable condition, but if my hon. Friend can supply me with further details of the practices he has in mind, I shall be glad to have them examined.
