HC Deb 29 September 1942 vol 383 c646
10. Mr. Woodburn

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he will make it possible that miners ready for work but not required will, instead of being laid off, be given the opportunity of assisting in the recovery of scrap-metal of various kinds in the workings?

Major Lloyd George

Provided that it is not possible for arrangements to be made for miners laid off their usual work to be employed in other work which will directly or indirectly assist in the production of coal, I am prepared to give every encouragement through the regional organisation to arrangements for the utilisation of their services, where possible, in the manner suggested by my hon. Friend.
