HC Deb 09 September 1942 vol 383 c139
31. Mr. John Dugdale

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether sailors returning from operations against the enemy are allowed extra petrol coupons in order to go on leave?

The First Lord of the Admiralty (Mr. A. V. Alexander)

Naval personnel who own cars are allowed petrol coupons while on leave from active service for recreational purposes and for travelling to and from their leave addresses. For recreational purposes they may obtain sufficient petrol for 300 miles every six months, and for travelling to and from their leave addresses sufficient for up to 250 miles every three months.

Captain Strickland

Can that privilege be extended to the relatives of sailors in the cases where the sailors themselves are returning home?

Mr. Alexander

I should have to have notice of that question.

Miss Ward

Does the Minister's statement apply to the Merchant Navy as well as to naval personnel?

Mr. Alexander

That is a question for the Ministry of War Transport.
