HC Deb 09 September 1942 vol 383 c125
6. General Sir George Jeffreys

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether it is proposed to amalgamate or co-ordinate the diplomatic and consular services?

Mr. Eden

Yes, Sir. It is proposed that, when entry into the Service is resumed after the war, entrants will be recruited as members of a combined Foreign Service instead of, as hitherto, as members of the Diplomatic or Consular Services.

Sir G. Jeffreys

Can my right hon. Friend issue a statement of the terms under which the members of the existing Consular and Diplomatic Services are to be amalgamated?

Mr. Eden

The terms of the amalgamation are yet to be worked out. This cannot apply until after the war, because there are no entrants at all now.
