§ 5. Sir P. Hannonasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what are the recent developments in the activities of the British Council in Argentina; whether the new library and reading room at Buenos Aires are receiving increasing patronage in that city; and whether the classes in operation secure substantial attendance?
§ Mr. EdenAn Association of English Culture has been founded at Tucuman. A similar association at Rosario has acquired new premises, and the premises and activities of the Association of British Culture at Cordoba have been extended under a new director. The Council are helping to find British professors for a number of faculties at the recently founded National University 125 of Cuyo at Mendosa. The Council's chief representative in Spanish-speaking America has set up a central office in Buenos Aires and established close relations with educational and cultural authorities.
§ Sir P. HannonCan my right hon. Friend say whether the work of the British Council in Argentina is regarded sympathetically by the local people and the local education authorities?
§ Mr. EdenI think so, certainly. I understand that over 4,000 students are attending these classes, and that speaks for itself.
