HC Deb 08 October 1942 vol 383 cc1360-1
47. Colonel Carver

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he can assure the House that sufficient labour is available to harvest the sugar-beet crop?

Mr. Hudson

Much depends on the weather, but I think the arrangements made this year should provide enough labour to assist farmers in harvesting the sugar-beet crop.

Colonel Carver

Can my right hon. Friend say whether farmers are being encouraged to avail themselves of the labour of soldiers stationed in their district?

Mr. Hudson

They ought to exhaust all possible alternative forms of labour before they apply for military help.
