HC Deb 08 October 1942 vol 383 cc1367-8
62. Mr. Summers

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether in view of the advantage to civil and military transport, especially at night and in fog, he will arrange for signposts to be replaced, knowing that, if necessary, they could be removed again within a few hours?

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport (Mr. Noel-Baker)

I am glad to inform my hon. Friend that it has been decided, in consultation with the military authorities, and within certain limits and subject to certain conditions, to re-erect signposts in towns. I am taking steps to give effect to this decision with the least possible delay.

Rear-Admiral Beamish

Will the hon. Member bear in mind that headlights now shine only very low, and will he consider having signposts placed low, so that they can be seen?

Mr. Noel-Baker

I will see that that suggestion is borne in mind.

Sir F. Fremantle

Will my hon. Friend consider replacing some of the signposts in the country districts, which are even more important?

Mr. Noel-Baker

Perhaps my hon. Friend will put down a Question on that subject.
