HC Deb 19 November 1942 vol 385 cc482-3
18. Mr. Brooke

asked the Minister of Labour whether married women with one or more children, who have registered under the Registration for Employment Order, are all being treated as exempt from interview or from compulsory obligation to do war work, without inquiry whether they have their children at home and are themselves looking after them?

Mr. Bevin

Inquiries are made at the time of registration whether a mother has her young children living with her. If she has, she is not summoned for interview or directed to employment under present arrangements.

Mr. Brooke

Is the Minister aware that a number of women were not asked this question when they registered—although that may have been in the earlier days of registration? Will he bear that fact in mind when planning future woman-power policy?

Mr. Bevin

Yes, Sir.
