HC Deb 19 November 1942 vol 385 cc492-3
65. Professor Savory

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the arrest, on 12th November, at Holyhead, of a woman arriving from Eire who was fined for concealing important Irish Republican documents, including a code, in the lining of her hat; and why, instead of being detained in this country, she was sent back to Eire, as she may make an attempt to carry these documents to Northern Ireland?

Mr. H. Morrison

My attention has been called to this case, and I am making further inquiries with regard to it. The documents referred to were retained by the police in this country, and the question of ordering her detention for the purpose mentioned in the Question did not therefore arise.

Professor Savory

May I ask what guarantee the right hon. Gentleman offers that the same lady will not play the same hat trick on Northern Ireland?
