HC Deb 20 May 1942 vol 380 cc236-7
60. Mr. Mack

asked the Minister of Supply the reasons for the suspension of the production officer of his Department at the end of last month?

Sir A. Duncan

The production officer to whom the Question refers was suspended from duty for disobeying the instructions of superior authority. The case has now been fully investigated by a senior officer of the Ministry, and instructions have been given for the production officer's dismissal.

Mr. Mack

Is the Minister aware that the courageous and determined attitude of this production officer has the full support of the organised workers in this particular factory, who are thoroughly disgusted with the state of inefficiency which prevails there? Is he fully cognisant of these facts?

Sir A. Duncan

I have read every paper on the file in connection with this case. With courage and determination in any organisation you must also combine wisdom and discretion, and I am satisfied that this officer is not equipped for the proper service of this Department.

Mr. Mack

May I ask why a period of approximately five weeks was allowed to elapse before a letter of dismissal was sent to this officer?

Sir A. Duncan

Because, although the investigation had taken place at an earlier date, a letter was received by me from a Member of Parliament, and I felt it necessary in those circumstances to review the case again myself.
