HC Deb 19 May 1942 vol 380 c13
26. Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that whilst ornamental furniture at high prices are on sale there is a shortage of utility furniture, particularly of mattresses; and whether he will take steps to secure that the available capacity is concentrated upon the production of utility furniture?

Mr. Dalton

Yes, Sir. A Direction will shortly be made prohibiting after 31st May the manufacture of mattresses other than of utility types. The prices will be controlled, and as many mattresses will be produced as the supply of material permits. With regard to furniture, production has been severely curtailed by the shortage of timber, but I am taking steps to ensure that the available materials are used in the production of necessary articles of simple design.
