asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he intends that the proposed increase of allowance in respect of a wife's earned income shall be accompanied by a proportionate reduction in her post-war credit?

Sir K. Wood

The amount of the postwar credit continues to be determined by the increased tax paid as a result of the reduction of the personal allowances made by the Finance Act, 1941. There will be no offset in respect of the proposed increase in the allowance for a wife's earned income, but it must be borne in mind that the credit cannot be given at a higher rate than the rate of tax to which the taxpayer is liable, nor can it exceed the amount of tax paid.

Will the postwar credits be paid to the wife in proportion to the credit which has been placed to the wife's account?

I think that is so, if application is made so to do.
