§ 53. Sir J. Mellorasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he intends that the proposed increase of allowance in respect of a wife's earned income shall be accompanied by a proportionate reduction in her post-war credit?
§ Sir K. WoodThe amount of the postwar credit continues to be determined by the increased tax paid as a result of the reduction of the personal allowances made by the Finance Act, 1941. There will be no offset in respect of the proposed increase 30 in the allowance for a wife's earned income, but it must be borne in mind that the credit cannot be given at a higher rate than the rate of tax to which the taxpayer is liable, nor can it exceed the amount of tax paid.
§ Dr. Edith SummerskillWill the postwar credits be paid to the wife in proportion to the credit which has been placed to the wife's account?
§ Sir K. WoodI think that is so, if application is made so to do.
