asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of the continued rise in the cost of living and the grave situation in Jamaica as to food supplies, it is intended to recommend to the local Government the rationing of essential foodstuffs?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

Certain measures, including pegging prices and an extension of Government purchase of imported foodstuffs, have been approved, but my Noble Friend does not consider that a rationing system is necessary or, indeed, practicable at the present time. The problem is one of price, not of supply, and it is being dealt with as such.

Mr. Adams

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there is a great deal of Press agitation in favour of rationing in defence of the people's interests there?

Mr. Macmillan

I think that in this case it is mistaken. The important thing is to maintain the price level.
