HC Deb 24 March 1942 vol 378 cc1802-3
44. Mr. Mainwaring

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether members of the Civil Service, billeted throughout the country, are entitled to see to it that they are registered for all rationed foods; and has he satisfied himself that they are being justly served where this does not obtain?

Major Lloyd George

So far as rationing regulations are concerned, billeted civil servants are in the same position as any other members of the public. Those residing in private houses may register with retailers of their choice: those residing in establishments such as boarding houses and hotels do not themselves register since the establishments obtain the necessary supplies of rationed foods for feeding all the residents. I have no information which leads me to think that Civil Service billetees are not receiving their fair shares of rationed foods.

Mr. Mainwaring

Does the right hon. and gallant Gentleman consider it possible that any house in which members of the Civil Service are billeted can adequately be fed with less than the rationed quantities of food permitted to the individual in this country?

Major Lloyd George

I do not, but I have no information to the effect that that has been happening anywhere.

Mr. Mainwaring

Would the right hon. and gallant Gentleman consider any case reported to him by civil servants throughout the country?

Major Lloyd George

I should be very glad to do so.
