HC Deb 18 March 1942 vol 378 c1516
62. Mr. Jewson

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food why people living in clubs have to give up all their soap coupons, and are thereby prevented from having their washing done by private employees as heretofore; and will he take steps to remove this difficulty?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food (Major Lloyd George)

Residents in clubs and other catering establishments are required to surrender their soap coupons because the soap rationing scheme enables the establishment to obtain supplies for all purposes, including the use of soap by residents. This arrangement will be reviewed shortly with other similar problems which have arisen in connection with soap rationing.

Mr. Jewson

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that this is a matter affecting the length of life of the clothing concerned, and therefore a serious matter at the present time, as indicated by the President of the Board of Trade yesterday?

Major Lloyd George

I must refer my hon. Friend to my answer, in which I said that these arrangements will be reviewed shortly.
