HC Deb 18 March 1942 vol 378 cc1512-3
54. Major Lyons

asked the Minister of Supply whether, in view of the fact that machinery for the manufacture of sand-fly and mosquito netting is being used for other and private purposes, he will appoint a controller, or other official, experienced in the manufacture of such goods, with power to acquire and coordinate for service requirements all necessary production and supplies and to ensure the utilisation of all machinery capable of manufacturing these articles?

The Minister of Supply (Sir Andrew Duncan)

As I informed my hon. and gallant Friend on nth March, Service requirements for sand-fly and mosquito netting are being fully met. If Service demands should render it necessary, the remaining capacity of the industry will, of course, be drawn upon.

Major Lyons

Would my right hon. Friend have an inquiry made into this matter, for it is frequently alleged that the whole of the industry is now in the hands of a small monopoly and that the smaller producers are not in any way allowed to contribute their quota of this undoubtedly necessary article?

Sir A. Duncan

Yes; if my hon. Friend will let me have fuller particulars, I shall be glad to make inquiry.
