HC Deb 17 March 1942 vol 378 cc1326-7
50. Mr. Stokes

asked the Lord President of the Council whether he is aware of the waste of time and energy in connection with the Maby dowsing experiments, which system was proved useless on 28th February at Bourton-on-Hill; and whether he will give instructions that this matter is now to be dropped by all Departments concerned?

Mr. Sandys

I have been asked to reply. I am aware of these experiments. A report on them is at present being considered.

Mr. Stokes

Is the Financial Secretary aware that Mr. Maby refuses to submit himself to proper controlled experiments and is he also aware that three Departments,, the Admiralty, the Ministry of Aircraft Production, and the Ministry of Supply have all in turn been investigating this bogus proceeding and would it not be sufficient if only one had done so?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

May we know how much this work costs?

Mr. Sandys

These experiments were considered to be useful. If their continuance ceases to be useful they will be discontinued.

Mr. Stokes

But is the hon. Gentleman aware that Mr. Maby refuses to submit himself to the only experiment worth while, saying that he must know whether or not the reactionary element is present before he will try, in case he is found wrong?

Mr. Sandys

I am not prepared to discuss the details of these experiments.
