HC Deb 12 March 1942 vol 378 cc1199-200
58. Mr. David Adams

asked the Secretary for Mines whether, as the weekly output of coal is still below the target figure and the industry is still short of the minimum man-power required, it is now intended to recruit from other less essential industries skilled miners to meet the same either permanently or for the spring or summer months only?

The Secretary for Mines (Mr. David Grenfell)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Normanton (Mr. T. Smith) on 10th March.

Mr. Adams

Would the Minister state the nature of that reply, and is he aware that collieries are idle in County Durham for lack of man-power?

Mr. Grenfell

I said in the answer I gave that we are discussing the matter at an early date.
