asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will instruct bank and insurance companies to make a return to him henceforth of the amount of all subscriptions to War Loans and war weapons' weeks made by them when not directly on behalf of their depositors?

No, Sir. For the reason which I gave in my reply to my hon. Friend on 17th February, I do not think that any useful purpose would be served by such returns.

Is the Chancellor aware that that was a reply to a different Question? Is there no real desire to learn the truth and ascertain what is subscribed from genuine savings and what in fact comes from the banks?
