HC Deb 05 March 1942 vol 378 c784
13. Major Stourton

asked the Horne Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to a recent prosecution revealing the theft of five tons of corned beef from the centre of an invasion dump, which was subsequently disposed of in the black market; and whether, in view of the fact that the existing law does not allow of adequate sentences being passed in this and similar cases, His Majesty's Government will consider so amending the Treachery Act as to include such an offence to be made punishable by death?

Mr. H. Morrison

I am aware of the case referred to, particulars of which were given by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food in reply to a Question by the hon. Member for Plaistow (Mr. Thorne) on 17th February. Two persons were convicted, and each received a sentence of four years' penal servitude. As regards the last part of the Question, perhaps my hon. and gallant Friend will await the further statement which, as was announced on Tuesday, I hope to be in a position to make shortly in regard to certain further measures for dealing with offences of this character which are now under consideration.

Major Stourton

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the time is long overdue for the Government to take some drastic action to destroy this enemy within our gates?

Mr. Morrison

Action has already been taken, and further action will be announced shortly.
