HC Deb 30 June 1942 vol 381 c8
5. Mr. Daggar

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is aware that men discharged from His Majesty's Forces on Class W reserve for work in the coalmines and other essential services are, in some instances, provided with a suit of clothes or £2 10S.; that their family allowances cease on discharge; that, if they are miners, they have to provide their own tools by borrowing money to do so; that, until wages are payable, they have to apply to the Assistance Board for an allowance and have only one suit of clothes for work and evening wear; and will he take appropriate measures to deal with these problems?

Major Lloyd George

A full statement of the actual arrangements made in such cases was given on 28th April by the Secretary for Mines in reply to a Question by my hon. Friend. There should be no cases where men have to apply for help to the Assistance Board, and I am not aware of any failure in the arrangements, but if my hon. Friend has any particular case in mind, perhaps he would communicate with me.
