HC Deb 30 June 1942 vol 381 cc8-9
6. Mrs. Tate

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is aware that fun fairs are still blazing with light from morning till night; that one shooting gallery in a fun fair in Blackpool the other day had no less than 50 coloured lights illuminating it in broad daylight; that a revolving electrical machine three feet in diameter was lighted by six 100 watt bulbs all day; and whether, in view of the urgent need for fuel economy, he will take steps to regulate these and other unnecessary forms of lighting?

Major Lloyd George

I am aware that there is much unnecessary use of light in establishments of this kind. My hon. Friend will be aware that I have just made an Order under which those responsible for waste or uneconomical use of fuel here or elsewhere will be liable for prosecution.

Mrs. Tate

I trust that this will also apply to Government Departments, many of which still do their blackout at 6 o'clock in the evening?

Mr. Denville

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that in Blackpool most of the light complained of is waste power from the engines driving the roundabouts?

Viscountess Astor

Will not the Government change their policy and see that all those concerned are got together for consultation with a view to stopping these fun fairs, which are a crime against the younger people, and will the Minister use his moral power to get fun fairs stopped, for the sake of the juveniles?

Major Lloyd George

At the moment I am concerned with fuel.

Viscountess Astor

If their fuel is stopped, the fun fairs will have to stop.
