HC Deb 30 June 1942 vol 381 cc35-6
Mr. Shinwell (by Private Notice)

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he can now make a statement on the recent explosion at Murton colliery?

Major Lloyd George

I regret to inform the House that an explosion of firedamp occurred about 8 o'clock on Friday evening last at Murton Colliery, County Durham. Thirteen persons were killed and three others seriously injured. The heading in which the explosion appears to have originated has been cleared, and investigations are actively proceeding. I am sure the House will wish to be associated with me in expressing our deep sympathy with the relatives of those killed and our earnest hope that the injured will speedily recover.
