HC Deb 23 June 1942 vol 380 cc1801-2
30. Mr. Barr

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many wet canteens have been authorised in Scotland under the provisions of Defence Regulation 60AA (Canteens for civilian workers, seamen and fishermen)?

Mr. Johnston

Three canteens have been authorised in Scotland under the provisions of Defence Regulation 60AA—two by the Secretary of State for Air and one by the Minister of Labour and National Service.

Mr. Barr

How is it that so little advantage has been taken of this particular Defence Regulation?

Viscountess Astor

What has the Secretary of State for Scotland been doing all this time?

Mr. Johnston

As to why so little advantage has been taken of Regulation 60AA, I should imagine, although it is only a guess, that the absence of any private appropriation of profits from these canteens has limited the number of applications.

Major Lyons

How many applications have been made to and refused by the right hon. Gentleman?

Mr. Johnston

I should require notice of that Question.

Mr. McKinlay

How many stoppages of work have taken place because of the lack of drinking facilities?

Mr. Johnston

I know of none, but the hon. Member had better put down a Question.

Viscountess Astor

Is it not the case that during the last war the Government of the day had to limit drink because they wanted to increase output, while this Government seem to think that the more you drink the better you work?

Mr. Johnston

No, Sir, that is exactly contrary to the facts.
