HC Deb 23 June 1942 vol 380 c1798
24. Mr. Hannah

asked the Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been called to the anomaly by which soldiers need to use their wives' or any other coupons, in order to buy handkerchiefs or underwear; and whether he will arrange that soldiers have coupons of their own?

Sir J. Grigg

Soldiers are under no such necessity. They can buy handkerchiefs from retailers on production of certificates from their commanding officers authorising them to do so. Underwear is issued to them, and replaced free as necessary.

Mr. Hannah

Then why are the soldiers' wives so very unhappy and discontented?

Mr. McGovern

Perhaps at losing their husbands.
