HC Deb 10 June 1942 vol 380 cc1054-5
48. Sir Henry Morris-Jones

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he will, before continuing the advertisements in the Press for women and girls as shorthand typists, etc., at Government offices in Colwyn Bay, investigate complaints which are being made by those now employed there that they have not sufficient to do?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food (Major Lloyd George)

The staffing arrangements in the Ministry of Food are under constant review. The hon. Member will, I am sure, appreciate that general allegations of slackness do a great deal of harm unless they rest upon evidence; if such evidence is in his possession, I shall be glad to receive it, if necessary in the strictest confidence, and will undertake to have a thorough investigation made.

Sir H. Morris-Jones

Is it not the case that public opinion in this town, where the facts are known, is very concerned at the wastage of war power that goes on in offices in this Department, and while no reflection has been made on men and women who do work hard there, will my right hon. and gallant Friend make searching investigations into the position, in view of the sacrifices that are called for from many one-man businesses at the present time?

Major Lloyd George

If the facts are well known and if my hon. Friend will be good enough to do as I asked and send them to me, I will look into them.
