HC Deb 30 July 1942 vol 382 cc679-80
42. Mr. Thorne

asked the Home Secretary why Fireman W. J. Mercer, registered No. 146, stationed at Silvertown, West Ham, was discharged on medical grounds without any compensation?

Mr. H. Morrison

This fireman was discharged on account of sickness, after the maximum period of sick leave on full pay to which he was entitled. This was not a case of injury and there is no provision for compensation.

Mr. Thorne

Is my right hon. Friend aware that one of the troubles this man was subject to was due to the fact that he slept in a bed in which another fireman had slept who was suffering from a disease which I cannot pronounce?

Mr. Morrison

My information is that the fireman's illness, for which I am sorry, had no connection with his work in the Fire Service. If my hon. Friend has evidence to the contrary, I shall be glad to consider it.
