HC Deb 08 July 1942 vol 381 cc744-5
5. Mr. Hannah

asked the Secretary of State for Air why members of the Royal Observer Corps holding "G" licences are forbidden to give lifts to soldiers, to carry children to school, or make themselves useful in any such way, even though their cars may be nearly empty; and will he take steps to avoid this waste of petrol?

Sir A. Sinclair

"G" certificates are issued to members of the Royal Observer Corps, as to other servants of the Crown who do not receive petrol for private purposes, to enable them to carry out their official duties. For this purpose the certificates take the place of excise licences and the carrying of unauthorised passengers would be an offence involving penalties for driving an unlicensed vehicle.

Mr. Hannah

Is not giving a lift to a purely private soldier in the interests of the country?

Sir A. Sinclair

I can only tell my hon. Friend what the law is, and I am advised that it would be an offence against the law.

Mr. Hannah

Is not this a case where the law is rather an ass?
