HC Deb 08 July 1942 vol 381 cc763-4
38. Sir L. Lyle

asked the Prime Minister whether he will consider the desirability of making arrangements to relay the chimes of Big Ben so that they can be heard in the Chamber, not so loudly as to interfere with proceedings but with sufficient clarity to provide a reminder for the Member who is speaking of the passage of time?

The Lord Privy Seal (Sir Stafford Cripps)

I do not think my hon. Friend's suggestion would serve the purpose which he has in view.

Sir L. Lyle

Could not some volume control be fitted in connection with my suggestion?

Sir S. Cripps

I think, in order to achieve the hon. Gentleman's object, the volume control should be fitted to the Member and not to the clock.

Mr. Crowder

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider providing the Clerk at the Table with a gong?
