HC Deb 08 July 1942 vol 381 c763
36. Mr. Ivor Thomas

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has considered the representations from the engineering industry that difficulties are being experienced in the recruitment of new entrants, especially women and girls, as they are excluded from the supplementary awards of coupons for protective clothing; and whether, in order to encourage new entrants, he will take the necessary steps to remove these difficulties?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade (Captain Waterhouse)

I am not aware that potential workers are failing to take their proper place in production for this reason. Arrangements are being made and will be announced within the next few weeks under which new entrants to industry will receive the appropriate supplementary allowances.
