HC Deb 07 July 1942 vol 381 cc615-6
2. Mr. Kennedy

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he proposes to ask education authorities, particularly in the larger burghs and industrial areas, to keep open throughout the holidays, with provision of meals and suitable occupation for the children?

The Joint Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Westwood)

My right hon. Friend has recommended in recent circulars that education authorities, with the co-operation of the teachers, should make special arrangements for the provision of meals and of suitable organised activities for the children during the school holidays.

Mr. Kennedy

Can my hon. Friend say whether there is a very satisfactory response by the local education authorities?

Mr. Westwood

As far as the four counties of cities are concerned, they are, I understand, making the necessary arrangements, but we have made special appeals to all education authorities to try and meet the requirements of the children under existing conditions.
