47. Mr. Davidsonasked the Prime Minister whether he intends, in the near future, issuing a statement to all the Fighting Services indicating our war aims and stating clearly the Government's pledge on planning responsibility for those who return?
§ Mr. AttleeI have nothing to add at present to the various statements that have been made on these subjects.
Mr. DavidsonIs my right hon. Friend aware that it is some considerable time since the statement was made, and that discussions are going on among men in the Services with regard to this particular point? Does he not think it would be a good idea if the Government issued a plain statement to members of the Fighting Services, which would give them a greater incentive?
§ Mr. AttleeMy hon. Friend will realise there are a number of difficult financial and economic problems concerned with these post-war matters. They are being very closely investigated by my right hon. and learned Friend the Paymaster-General, but I will certainly bear in mind my hon. Friend's suggestion.
§ Mr. John DugdaleIs my right hon. Friend aware that a number of men in the Fighting Services are erroneously under the impression that our intention is 508 to return as rapidly as possible to pre-war conditions, and will he make a statement to dispose of that?
§ Mr. AttleeMy reply to this Question, in which I stated emphatically that that is not so, will perhaps clear that up.
