HC Deb 02 July 1942 vol 381 c489
24. Mr. Messer

asked the Minister of Health the number, of cases of primary pneumonia occurring annually for the last 10 years to the most convenient date, indicating when treatment of this condition by chemotherapy came into general use in this country?

Mr. E. Brown

During the 10 years 1932 to 1941 inclusive, the average number of cases of acute primary and acute influenzal pneumonia notified annually was 50,912, with a maximum figure of 65,009 cases in 1933 and a minimum of 42,312 in 1939. I am advised that chemotherapy in the treatment of pneumonia was introduced about six years ago and has come into general use since 1938.
