§ 45. Major Lyonsasked the Prime Minister whether immediate vacancies exist for man-power in the Armed Forces of the Crown and in war industry, respectively; whether, in present circumstances, he will instruct that on determination of liability call-up and posting should be immediate and that no delay should be permitted on the score of no intake demand in any particular direction and that waiting lists should be terminated?
§ The Deputy Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee)In reply to the first part of the Question, vacancies are constantly arising and being filled. Waiting lists are necessary in a few special cases; but in general there are no waiting lists properly so-called. Men and women are called up or required to transfer to other work as and when the need arises, and meanwhile are allowed to remain in their existing occupations, in which for the most part they are giving useful service.
§ Major LyonsIn view of what is felt to be the general delay throughout the country in regard to the calling up of the persons referred to in the Question, and the spirit of frustration which this sort of thing causes, will the right hon. Gentleman himself look into the specific cases brought to his notice?
§ Mr. AttleePerhaps the hon. and gallant Gentleman will give me some evidence for his statement.
§ Mr. BernaysWill my right hon. Friend bear in mind that in the Army older men who have been called up find that the courses are not available for them?
