HC Deb 02 July 1942 vol 381 c478
4. Major Lyons

asked the Minister of Labour whether he now proposes to take the necessary steps to mobilise for appropriate national service all those persons under 41 years of age whose liability is determined but who are of a lower medical category and who are not engaged in any work of war importance?

Mr. Bevin

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to the hon. Member for Salford West (Mr. Emery) on 19th March relating to men placed in Medical Grades III and IV. Similar arrangements are now being introduced for women placed in those grades.

Major Lyons

In view of the present-day position, would the right hon. Gentleman consider taking some action to provide national service for a large number of people who are doing no work at all for the war effort and have never taken any part in it? Will he take steps to find something useful for them to do?

Mr. Bevin

I am not prepared to admit these general statements that large numbers of people are doing nothing for the war effort.
