HC Deb 01 July 1942 vol 381 c210
55. Sir Leonard Lyle

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food what is the smallest size loaf bakers are allowed to put on the market; and whether he is satisfied that public inability to purchase small loaves which may be all that is needed is not a cause of waste?

Mr. Mabane

Bakers are permitted to sell I lb. loaves of national bread, 8 oz. loaves of Vienna bread and small rolls. I am satisfied that the small units at present available reasonably meet present-day requirements. Small loaves are costly in man-power, fuel and transport and, generally speaking, are more expensive to buy.
