HC Deb 28 January 1942 vol 377 cc691-2
3. Mr. Cocks

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what Government is now representing British interests in occupied France; whether the arrangements for providing financial assistance to British subjects in occupied France, formerly undertaken by the United States of America authorities, are being continued; and, if so, through what channel?

Mr. Law

The Swiss Government have replaced the United States Government as the Protecting Power in occupied France. Through their representatives financial assistance will be provided for British subjects in that area. The Swiss Government have already been supplied with funds for this purpose.

Mr. Cocks

Has there been any difficulty about these payments due to the German Government's insistence that they should be made in free dollars and, if so, has that difficulty been removed?

Mr. Law

No, Sir, there is no difficulty of that kind.
