HC Deb 28 January 1942 vol 377 c725
6. Mr. Burke

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware of the high charges for sending money orders to service men stationed in the Near and Middle East; and whether he can arrange for a reduction in these charges?

The Postmaster-General (Mr. W. S. Morrison)

There is no money order service available to His Majesty's Forces in the Near and Middle East. Remittances can, however, be made by postal orders, the charges for which are at the ordinary inland rates. Postal orders are encashable at any Army Post Office, at certain civil Post Offices, or if necessary by the commanding officer of the addressee's unit.

Mr. Burke

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that it costs 7s. 9d. to send 10s. to the troops in Malta and 13s. 9d. to send £3?

Mr. Morrison

I do not think it can cost as much as that because the poundage rates for postal orders are the same as in this country and they can be transmitted by post in the ordinary way.

Mr. Burke

But suppose they have to be sent hurriedly by telegraph?

Mr. Morrison

My hon. Friend is referring to telegraph charges with which the Question did not deal. I will inquire into that and communicate with him.
