HC Deb 28 January 1942 vol 377 cc724-5
74. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Economic Warfare whether he is aware of the critical food situation in Greece and other territories of Allied Powers; what representations have been made to His Majesty's Government by the Greek Government or its representatives respecting the existing famine in Greece; and whether any proposals a re being considered, either in conjunction with the Turkish Government or otherwise, to meet the urgent need of the Greek people by securing for them fuller supplies of foodstuffs under appropriate guarantees that these shall be exclusively for the Greek people?

Mr. Foot

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given yesterday to my hon. Friend the Member for Stockport (Sir A. Gridley). The action taken by His Majesty's Government is in response to representations by the Greek Government.

Mr. Sorensen

Has the relaxation of the blockade to meet the needs of the Greek people been judged by the Greek Government to be satisfactory?

Mr. Foot

We have not yet had time to consult the Greek Government about the answer given yesterday.

Mr. Sorensen

When is the Department likely to have consultations with the Greek Government on this subject?

Mr. Foot

We are in constant communication with the Greek Government on this and other matters?
