18. Mr. Creech Jonesasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is satisfied with the character and quality of the work done by the local and unified Colonial services in Malaya during the past year, and particularly just before, and since, the outbreak of hostilities in that part of the world?
§ Mr. George HallYes, Sir; but the rapid Japanese advance through northern and central Malaya has, of course, led to quite abnormal conditions, and in such circumstances it would indeed be surprising if some mistakes had not been made. But my Noble Friend is satisfied that the Civil Service in Malaya has acquitted itself with ability and devotion, and he has no doubt that they will continue to play with credit their part in the battle of Malaya.
Mr. Creech JonesIn view of the continuous criticism by broadcasters and journalists of the ability of and the manner in which the Civil Service discharged its responsibilities, does my hon. Friend agree that it would be much better if, instead of directing their criticism to individuals, they would apply constructive criticism to the whole problem of Colonial policy?
§ Mr. HallMy hon. Friend will know that certain action has been taken with regard to certain broadcasts to which he has referred.
