HC Deb 27 January 1942 vol 377 cc557-8
49. Professor Savory

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the omission of the French portion of his speech at Ottawa by the greater part of the Press, he will issue this speech as a White Paper in order to enable the British public to share the appreciation of French Canadians of the sentiments expressed by him in the French language when addressing the Canadian Parliament?

Mr. Attlee

My right hon. Friend does not think there is any need to do as my hon. Friend suggests, especially as he understands that full reports of the speech can still be obtained by those who desire them.

Professor Savory

Will the right hon. Gentleman convey to the Prime Minister the intense desire of students of French at the University of Belfast to have the full text of the French portion of his speech, which has not yet been published, as far as I am aware?

Mr. Attlee

I understand it was published in the newspapers.

Professor Savory

No, Sir. Only a mutilated portion. Those who heard the whole speech deeply regretted that the French part was so mutilated.
