HC Deb 08 January 1942 vol 377 cc22-3
41. Sir Percy Hurd

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will relax the restrictions imposed on the sending of remittances from this country for the benefit of mothers and children evacuated to Canada, the United States of America and other places outside the sterling area?

42. Miss Cazalet

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the Government have yet decided to make any financial concession to women and children evacuated to America since the outbreak of war?

Sir K. Wood

Yes, Sir. I have decided that in the light of present circumstances, it would be reasonable to allow limited sums to be transferred to meet out-of-pocket expenses. I am accordingly arranging for permission to be given for the remittance from this country of sums not exceeding £3 a month for any child who was under 16 at the time of departure, and in addition of sums not exceeding £10 per month for any adult who left this country in charge of children and is still shown to be responsible for them. No remittances can be allowed to adults not in charge of children. This concession will begin to operate as from 1st January, 1942, and will be handled from the Children's Overseas Reception Board, who will make a register of all recipients. All correspondence in this matter should be addressed to the organisation at Devonshire House, Mayfair Place, W.1. The concession applies in principle to children evacuated either privately or under the Children's Overseas Reception Board. Modifications may be necessary for remitting funds to children evacuated under the Government scheme and the terms will be announced shortly.

Mr. White

Does that policy refer also to serving officers?

Sir K. Wood

That is a question for my right hon. and gallant Friend the Secretary of State for War.
