§ 39. Mr. Harveyasked the President of the Board of Education whether he will make a statement as to the arrangements that are being made with regard to training for National Service of boys and girls between 16 and 18 years of age, and as to the opportunity to be afforded for consultation of the parents of these children as regards the organisations which they are encouraged to join?
§ The President of the Board of Education (Mr. Butler)The arrangements for the registration of young people of 16 to 18 years of age are dealt with in the Board's Circular 1577, a copy of which I am sending to the hon. Member. The young people will, no doubt, themselves consult their parents before deciding voluntarily to offer themselves for any particular form of training or service in the light of such information and advice as may be given to them at interview.
§ Mr. HarveyDoes my right hon. Friend not think that if the contents of that circular were more widely known, it would remove a great deal of apprehension?
§ Mr. ButlerI quite agree. I am taking steps to see that the contents are more widely known.
§ Sir Annesley SomervilleIs there not an arrangement—voluntary, of course—between the Board of Admiralty and the Sea Cadets' organisation?
§ Mr. ButlerThe Sea Cadets' organisation is one of those bodies to which I think boys will choose to go.
§ Mr. SorensenCan we have an opportunity at an early date to discuss this matter?
§ Mr. ButlerThat is not a matter for me; but I am always happy to give the fullest possible information.
