HC Deb 24 February 1942 vol 378 cc1-2
1. Sir Patrick Hannon

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he will make inquiries as to the present position of the Christian communities in the mandated territory of New Guinea; whether casualties have been reported; and whether appropriate measures have been taken for the safety of those engaged in missionary work in the island?

The Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Mr. Attlee)

As my hon. Friend is no doubt aware, the matter is one within the authority of His Majesty's Government in the Commonwealth of Australia. I am making inquiries to see what information can be supplied.

Sir P. Hannon

Have any efforts been made through the Red Cross or otherwise, to give those engaged in missionary work in the Far East every possible protection?

Mr. Attlee

Yes, Sir.
